WELCOME:
My name is Kim Terrill, and I will be your COM 1100 instructor for this semester. I'm looking forward to working with you to make this a great learning experience. I know that some may find the idea of public speaking scary, but I think you'll find that this course has many resources to help you combat your nerves as well as helping you hone your public speaking skills. I want to welcome you to the class and provide you with some critical information to help you get started and stay ahead.
Warning: this message is long, but please read it to the end because it contains many tips and information you'll need to be successful in this class.
First, if you haven't taken a hybrid/online class before, please be aware that your success is contingent upon self-motivation and self-discipline since we will not be meeting on a weekly basis. Therefore, do your work promptly and be sure not to fall behind. Also, it's very important to check email often as this will be our primary means of communication and will be a vital resource for updates and information.
Second, I recommend committing some time to orient yourself with our Blackboard site. There you will find each assignment, the syllabus, and a link to my website. Please be sure to read the syllabus and the schedule of assignments carefully. Everything you'll be doing each week and throughout the term is listed there.
Third, we'll be using Revel as our interactive learning tool. It includes our e-textbook. You'll need to access the website (click on the Pearson Revel link under our class in Blackboard) and then follow the instructions to join. You should have options to purchase right from Revel, input an access code (if you do this, you'll need to first purchase it from the bookstore), or start a 14-day trial. (YOU MAY NOT COMPLETE ALL OF YOUR QUIZZES WITHIN THE 14-DAY TRIAL PERIOD TO AVOID HAVING TO PURCHASE THE BOOK.) Finally, Revel has an app you can use to do your readings and all your work. You'll use Revel to gain information about the speech making process (this takes the place of an in-class lecture) and to take quizzes. If you're having trouble with access, Pearson suggests clearing your cookies and cache in your internet browser before contacting them. They also suggest using Firefox, Chrome, or Safari as your browser instead of Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge. If you still are having problems, you may contact Pearson customer service from this link: https://support.pearson.com/getsupport/s/contactsupport
Fourth, under "assignment descriptions" on Blackboard, you'll find the major assignments for the course--self-critiques, outlines, and the speeches (introduction speech, informative "current event" speech, informative speech #2, the persuasive speech, and a special occasion speech.) Your reading assignments and quizzes will be done on Revel. Please note that I DO NOT accept late work. Quizzes are due on a specified date at a specified time. If your work is not completed by then, you will receive a zero (0) on the assignment even though Revel will allow you to continue working on the quizzes for an indefinite period of time. Any other assignment that is late will have a 10% deduction in points for every day that it is late. Speeches MUST be delivered the night they are scheduled! If a speech is missed or if a student if not prepared to deliver their speech on the assigned night, there will be a significant penalty for makeups, and the speech will have to be delivered via Zoom (live video conferencing) or the following class period (if we are meeting that week).
Fifth, on my website I have several videos that provide content tips and tricks and examples for the various topics we'll cover (e.g., supporting materials, language, organization, etc.). There is quite a bit of information on there regarding the major parts of a speech (content, organization, delivery, supporting materials, etc.) that you can use as an adjunct to the material you read in Revel. I also have a number of sample outlines and critiques as well as TED Talks I've uploaded to enhance the course.
Finally, be aware of where you'll be turning things in and when. Revel is used for quizzes each week. You will use email to submit outlines, self-analyses, etc. (some will be written directly into the email; others will be sent as Word attachments). My website: com1100kterrill.weebly.com is where you'll find videos, tips to speech-making, and other outside resources that will enhance your speech-making abilities. I know this is a lot of information to take in so please familiarize yourself with the various components (Blackboard, Revel, my website, etc.) before the course begins. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]
I look forward to meeting you soon!
Ms. Terrill
